Apple Removes iPhone 6 Availability From India Website

apple_website_iphone_6.jpg
Apple has been going back-and-forth on the India launch date of the iPhone 6. On September 9, the day of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 launch, the company had announced on its website that the iPhone 6 would be available in India on September 26 (screenshot). Some time later, that date was changed to October 17 on the Apple India website. On Thursday, NDTV Gadgets spotted that the iPhone 6 launch date has been removed from the website.
However, those who were hoping to buy the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus on launch day need not be disappointed. Apple is not known for communicating the date of availability of new products well in advance in India. We think this move signals a return to the pattern observed in previous years, when Apple would make no announcements regarding the availability of new iPhone devices in India.
The fact that Apple mentioned the launch date on India website was an aberration, the new iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus are still likely to launch on October 17. During the keynote announcing the launch of new iPhone devices and the Apple Watch, the company made no mention of when the new smartphones will make an appearance in India.
The company had instead announced the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will be available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK beginning on Friday, September 19, and customers can pre-order both models beginning on Friday, September 12.
NDTV Gadgets had reported that initially there was confusion over Apple announcing the India launch date of the iPhone 6 on its website. It was thought that the information was an error on the part of Apple, but later when the date was changed to October 17, it became apparent that the announcement was not an oversight.

Skype for Windows Phone Update Adds Location Sharing and More

skype_location_sharing_app_update_blog.jpg
Microsoft has started rolling out an update for its Skype app for Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1 platforms, adding several new features of which the most notable is location sharing.
The Skype version 2.22 for Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1 brings the 'save picture', 'notification controls for individual conversations' and the 'location sharing' features.
Users can now share their locations from within a chat window by taping on the + icon and selecting Share location with the people who are in the conversation. The recipients would see a Bing map showing the exact location of the user.
"Location sharing lets you have an even better chat experience on the go. Seeing friends or family and want to tell them where to meet you? Simply use this new feature to send them a Bing map of your location, pinpointing exactly where you are,"states the official Skype blog post.
The Skype for Windows Phone users can now also save images from a chat conversation onto their handsets by tapping on the image and navigating to the Save photo option. The option can be found under the More menu.
Lastly, the Skype app update enables users to control notifications for individual conversations. In a particular chat window, the users can navigate to their Notifications section under the More menu and can choose to turn on/off that particular chat's notifications.
The update is only Windows Phone exclusive and is yet toreach Android and iOS platforms.
The updated Skype app can be downloaded from the Windows Phone Store.
Microsoft also updated its Skype app for modern Windows in July by introducing the free group calling feature. The update let users call up to 10 people for free. Earlier the feature was only available to Skype Premium subscribers.

Apple Effect: On Track Innovations Soars, GT Advanced Slumps

man_taking_pic_of_apple_watch_iphone_6_ap.jpg
Apple Inc's unveiling of larger iPhones and a mobile payments service led to contrasting fortunes for GT Advanced Technologies Inc and On Track Innovations Ltd.
Shares of GT Advanced plunged a second day on Wednesday after it emerged that the company's scratch-resistant sapphire glass had been left out of Apple's new large-screen iPhones.
Stocks of mobile payment service providers such as On Track rallied after Apple introduced the long-awaited tap-to-pay technology on its latest iPhone and smartwatch on Tuesday.
The addition of the mobile payments service is expected to boost sales of the latest iPhones and help Apple claw back market share lost to mobiles running on Google Inc's Android platform.
Israel-based On Track gained as much as 50 percent after the company said it was testing two products that would equip Apple's older iPads and iPhones as well with mobile payment technology, or near-field communication (NFC).
Shares of other NFC-technology makers also rose. Net Element Inc more than doubled to $4.75 and USA Technologies Inc jumped as much as 15 percent to $2.35 on Wednesday. Shares of VeriFone Systems Inc were up 5.7 percent at $37.
GTAT: Slow production
GT Advanced's shares more than doubled in the nine months between Tuesday's unveiling of the new iPhones and Nov. 4, when the company announced a partnership with Apple to build a plant in Arizona to make sapphire materials.
After it became clear that only two Apple Watch (First Impressions) variants would have sapphire glass, at least three brokerages cut their price targets on GT Advanced's stock.
About 80 percent of GT Advanced's 2014 revenue was expected to come from sapphire-related sales, although the company had warned of a slow ramp-up in production of the material.
Analysts at Goldman Sachs said there was "heightened risk" about GT Advanced's ability to meet its 2014 revenue forecast of $600 million to $700 million, cutting their rating to "neutral" from "buy".
The brokerage's price target cut was the steepest - to $14 from $20.
The stock should be trading at $7.50, much lower than its Tuesday close of $14.94, according to StarMine's Intrinsic Valuation model, which takes analysts' five-year estimates and models the growth trajectory over a longer period of time.
Thiemo Lang, a portfolio manager at RobecoSAM in Zurich, told Reuters the investment firm sold its entire holding in GT Advanced in April because of "serious execution risks in the ramp-up of the sapphire production and their immediate suitability for cover glass application".

Google Unveils iOS Sync for Google Apps Device Management Solution

google_ios_sync_for_apple_devices.jpg
Google, soon after rebranding its decade-old Google Enterprise division as Google for Work, has announced a new device management feature for Apple devices called iOS Sync for Google Apps. Google says the feature will help deliver the 'increased security' needed to protect files, emails, documents and more on an iPhone or iPad.
The company in a blog post confirmed that the new iOS Sync feature has been integrated into the Gmail and Google Drive apps for iOS, so that users don't need to download an additional app to enable the device management feature. The newly announced iOS Sync feature will support iOS 7, 8 and, the recently announced devices iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.
The Google for Work blog post said, "Marvel and DC Comics, Star Wars and Star Trek, Emacs and VI - we all have our favorites. And then there's iOS and Android, each with dedicated fans. Regardless of which you prefer, there's no reason your device of choice should get in the way of your work. We're introducing iOS Sync for Google Apps giving you and your company the increased security needed to protect your files, emails, documents and more on your favorite iOS phone or tablet."
Google has listed the additional security options being rolled out with iOS Sync for Google Apps.
  1. Manage Google Apps: Set a policy that prompts employees to enroll their device when they log into Google Apps such as Google Drive and Gmail.
  2. Configure WiFi networks: Distribute WiFi passwords and certificates to employees so they can easily connect to trusted networks.
  3. Support for existing policies: Manage password requirements, data encryption and camera policies, as well as actions like remotely wiping a device, activation approvals and blocking devices.
Notably, Google had rolled out its Android device managment solution in May.
Last week, Google's Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt in a blog post titled 'Introducing Google for Work (the artist formerly known as Enterprise)' announced the new name for its enterprise division. "As of today, what was called Google Enterprise is now, simply, Google for Work. When we use the tools that make our lives easier-Google Apps, Maps, Search, Chrome, Android, Cloud Platform and more-work gets better. And that's what we're working on-the best of Google, now for work," Schmidt said.

Spice Retail on Thursday has unveiled its first 'Smartphone Spa', a concept where users can buy skins and other accessories as well as get repairs done for any brand of smartphone.
"As the store is located in the heart of the national capital, Connaught Place, scurrying for customer care centres will now become a thing of the past," said Prashant Bindal, Group CEO, Spice Retail Ltd.
Spice Retail, which runs a chain of retail outlets under 'Spice HotSpot' brand name, plans to set up similar spas in Bangalore and Kolkata as well.
"People invest good sum of money in buying a smartphone but when it comes to accessories like screen guards and skins, or even customer support, they have to look around for places. Spice Smartphone Spa will be a one-stop shop," Bindal told PTI.
He added that customers will be able to get services starting Rs. 100 upwards depending on their choice.
"Even for repair work, customers can drop their devices and we will send it to the authorised service centre," he said.

"Consumers can come in and get customised skins at affordable prices. We expect a lot of students to come in," he added.
Bindal said after seeing the response, the company will decide on how the concept will be expanded.
"We may have one such spa for a cluster of stores. There is huge potential in cities like Bangalore and Kolkata, we would look at them," he said.

Google Unveils Real-Time Feedback Option 'Applause' for Hangouts On Air

google_hangout_update_applause_official_blog.jpg
Google on Tuesday introduced a real-time feedback feature called Applause for its Hangouts On Air desktop interface.
With Applause, users will now be able to give simple thumbs up or thumbs down for any Hangout streaming on-air and Google will instantly chart them in real-time, below the streaming Hangout (see above image). Previously, the search giant had two other feedback options for Hangouts On Air - Q&A and Showcase.
Q&A allows Hangouts broadcasters to interact with their live audience in the form of question and answers in real-time, whereas Showcase allows broadcasters to direct viewers to websites, merchandise, YouTube videos, Google+ profile and Google play content, from the right-hand side of the Hangout On Air.
"With Q&A, Showcase and now Applause, we're excited to give viewers and creators more ways to interact live. So give Applause a try in your next Hangout On Air, and let us know what you think!" said Google's Ming Zhang on a Google+ post.
On Tuesday, Google reportedly started updating its Hangouts messaging app for Android (and its various desktop interfaces) to integrate Google Voice services, letting users chat via voice SMS and send voice mails. The changes are reportedly being made to the back-end, and users will not have to download an update.
Notably, the Google Hangouts app, which links both the text SMS and the Google Talk service, now delivers a notification about the integration via a pop-up window in the app's conversation list, giving an option to 'Migrate Google Voice to Hangouts.' The feature was earlier spotted in dogfooding stage in video uploaded by a YouTube user in July.

Moto 360 Smartwatch Teardown Reveals Outdated Chipset, 300mAh Battery

moto_360_ifixit_teardown1.jpg
Motorola's Moto 360 smartwatch might be breaking all sales record, as the device reportedly was listed 'sold out' soon after going on sale online, at least in the US.
However, a new teardown report has dragged the company into a controversy related to the battery capacity being publicised by the company. The teardown also reveals the old chipsets used on the Moto 360.
iFixit, the company that publishes free online repair guides for consumer electronics, got its hands on Motorola's much-anticipated Moto 360 smartwatch. After stripping the smartwatch down to the core, the teardown experts report that the device packs a 300mAh battery, instead of the 320mAh battery listed by the company's site.
moto_360_ifixit_teardown.jpg
Soon after the iFixit report went viral, Motorola had to issue a statement (via Arstechnica) that said, "The typical battery capacity for Moto 360 is 320mAh and the minimum is 300mAh. In the mobile industry, sometimes both the minimum and typical capacity is listed on the battery, with the typical capacity quoted as the official battery size. Both figures are included on the batteries of our Moto X, Moto E and Moto G devices. In the case of smaller devices, we aren't always able to list both figures. For Moto 360 we only had room for one figure and choose to list the minimal capacity of the battery. We see how this can be confusing and we will look into ways to add the typical capacity as well in the future."
Notably, the battery capacity on the Moto 360 seen in the teardown is comparable to Samsung's Gear Live, which also packs a 300mAh battery. The LG G Watch, unveiled earlier this year, is powered by a 400mAh battery. The G Watch R on the other hand, packs a 410mAh battery.
In addition to the battery, the teardown report also revealed some of the ancient chips on the Moto 360. One of the examples is the presence of TI's (OMAP3630) OMAP 3 application processor, which Engadget rightly points out, was famously seen on Motorola's 4-year-old Droid 2 smartphone, and first announced more than 5 years ago.
The Moto 360 smartwatch also uses Micron Technology's 2SB28 D9QRM 512MB RAM, and Toshiba-built 4GB NAND Flash, according to the teardown.
iFixit has given the Moto 360 smartwatch a repairability score of 3 out of 10 citing the complex build that requires expertise.
The Moto 360, priced at $250, was launched at an event last week alongside the second generation Moto G and Moto X smartphones

Hryb also explained that users would be able to see a list of top games in their profiles and in their friend's section via the new SmartGlass feature.
The second theme in the October update focuses on TV and video streaming improvements. The update will bring a new Media Player app that brings users the ability to stream content stored on home media servers or other devices that support DLNA. In addition, users would be able to playback mkv files from a USB device or via DLNA after the update.

25 Percent of Smartphones Sales Will Be Online in 2 Years: Micromax

Micromax_ceo_vineet_taneja_canvas_nitro_press.jpg
With growing consumer preference to shop online, domestic handset maker Micromax expects 25 percent of its smartphones sales to come from e-commerce platforms over the next two years.
The company, which has partnered e-commerce major Snapdeal for launching its latest handset - Canvas Nitro, currently gets about 10 percent of its sales from online purchases.
"Online is small but is definitely growing. About 10 percent of our sales are coming from that. Over the next two years, 25 percent of at least the smartphone sales would come from online," Micromax Chief Executive Officer Vineet Taneja said.
He added that the company would continue with its mix of online and offline sales.
The company on Monday launched a new octa-core smartphone, priced at Rs. 12,990, the Canvas Nitro.
Canvas Nitro, to be available exclusively on e-commerce major Snapdeal, is powered by a 1.7 GHz octa-core processor and Android 4.4.2 KitKat.
"We are excited to be partnering with Micromax to launch their latest product - the Canvas Nitro. The new product has most superior technology and we are sure that this will be well-received by our 25 million members," Snapdeal Senior Vice President - Electronics & Home Tony Navin said.
At Snapdeal, mobile and tablets are one of the fastest growing categories and this partnership is a strategic decision to add to the online marketplace's offerings, he added.
Micromax, which was recently reported to be the country's second largest handset maker, also plans to bring in two more smartphones apart from feature phones ahead of the festive season.
"Apart from the Android One phone, we will have one more smartphone and some feature phones, as there is still a market for them. By early next year, we should have a 4G handset as well," he said.
Currently, 60 percent of Micromax's sales volumes comes from feature phones, while the remaining is from smartphones.
As a large chunk of Indian users are migrating to affordable smarter devices from feature phones, Indian smartphone market grew 84 percent year-on-year to 18.42 million units from 10.02 million units (in April-June 2013 quarter), according to research firm IDC.
Korean handset maker Samsung still continues to lead the smartphone market with 29 percent share, followed by Micromax 18 percent, Karbonn 8 percent and Lava 6 percent.

Google Hosts Meetings Across Europe on Privacy Rights

google_door_reuters.jpg
A panel appointed by search engine Google will hold the first of a series of meetings on Tuesday to debate the balance between privacy and the free flow of information after a May court ruling reinforced Europeans' "right to be forgotten".
The event in Madrid will be the first of seven meetings in European capitals, as the Internet giant struggles with thousands of requests a month to remove from its search results everything from serious criminal records, embarrassing photos, instances of online bullying and negative press stories.
By mid-July, Google, which holds more than 80 percent of Europe's search market, said it had received more than 90,000 requests and accepted more than half since the European Union's top court ruled they must remove results if the information was "inadequate, irrelevant or no longer relevant".
Meanwhile data protection regulators from European countries, which are next set to meet on Sept. 15, are working on guidelines for the search engines, which also include Microsoft and Yahoo!, to ensure that requests are handled consistently.
Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin, who heads France's privacy watchdog and the WP29 group of EU national data protection authorities, said on Friday she was sceptical about the Google initiative, which she described as part of a "PR war" on an issue that was important to the company's business strategy.
"Google is trying to set the terms of the debate," she said. "They want to be seen as being open and virtuous, but they handpicked the members of the council, will control who is in the audience, and what comes out of the meetings."
If a search engine declines a person's request, he or she has the right to appeal to the national data protection regulator. Some 90 such appeals have been filed in Britain, 70 in Spain, 20 in France and 13 in Ireland.
Some examples of link removals have become public because Google notified media outlets such as the BBC and Guardian when their stories were removed from search results. That prompted critics to charge that Europe's Internet was being scrubbed and the press censored.

Spirit of ruling:

The Wikimedia Foundation, which operates online encyclopaedia Wikipedia, set up a web page to post all the link removal notices it has received, as a form of protest that attracts attention to the very information someone wanted removed.
Regulators have said that such notifications undermine the spirit of the court ruling on online privacy, and are considering whether they should try and curb them.
The issue of notifications is one of the many that Google asked the advisory panel to consider, said Sylvie Kauffmann, one of its members and the editorial director of France's Le Monde newspaper.
"There are a seemingly infinite variety of cases coming in, so Google is struggling to apply the court decision," said Kauffmann in an interview.
"Google has asked us to formulate ideas to help them, and there is of course a public relations dimension to the exercise as well."
Kauffman added that Google would not pay panel members, beyond covering their travel expenses, and that the company had assured them they would have total independence.
Google asked French regulator Falque-Pierrotin via letter whether she or other regulators would take part in the meetings, but she declined, saying it would be inappropriate for a regulator with enforcement powers. She said some national regulators could send staff members to observe the proceedings.
A spokesperson for the Spanish regulator said it had no plans to attend the Madrid meeting.
The advisory council includes eight representatives from outside Google, including a former German justice minister and two academics, as well as Google's general counsel David Drummond and chairman Eric Schmidt.
Other members include Jimmy Wales, the Wikipedia founder and vocal critic of the "right to be forgotten", United Nations human rights official Frank La Rue, and Jose-Luis Pinar, who headed Spain's data protection regulator from 2002 to 2007.
After Madrid the council will meet in Rome on Wednesday, Paris on Sept. 25, Warsaw on Sept. 30, Berlin on Oct. 14, and London on Oct. 16, before concluding in Brussels on Nov. 4

Twitter Connects India to Needs of Flood-Hit Kashmir

twitter_logo_with_black_background_reuters.jpg
As floods - worst in the last 60 years - ravage Jammu and Kashmir, the social media is abuzz with heart-touching messages about the depredations wrought and immediate needs of those affected.
List of basic needs like cough syrup, sanitary napkins, milk powder, mosquito repellents and first-aid boxes are being retweeted on micro-blogging site Twitter, along with pictures of flood-ravaged Jammu and Kashmir and pleas of people whose families are trapped in the floods.
A group of organisations has also come together to accelerate the process of reaching out to the flood victims and donors through a website www.jkfloodrelief.org.
They have made a list of items - compiled by volunteers and reliable on-ground connections - to create a consolidated platform to deal with a small step in the relief operation.
The hashtag #Kashmirfloods is connecting all those who are looking for various avenues to donate, to share, to find their loved ones or to applaud rescue operation missions by the army.
"Sending clothes is nuisance at this point," Anshu Gupta, founder and director of Goonj, an NGO whose expertise lies in flood-rescue operations, told IANS.
"What is needed right now are medicines that can fight water-borne diseases, utensils to eat, torches, good-quality solar lanterns, blankets and woollens," he added.
Along with Goonj, Twitter India, pharmaceutical firm Cipla, Said Iqbal Memorial Trust, Uday Foundation and IndiGo Airlines have collaborated to run the website and reach out to millions who want to donate but are not sure "what and how".
"This is a systematic way of reaching to people. At times, people give food items like 'aloo puri'. But at this stage, this is not required. What people can donate is dry fruits," said Gupta, whose organisation did a remarkable job following the Uttarakhand disaster.
Apart from basic items like medicines and torches, people are asking for sanitary napkins that are much needed during this calamity.
"So I wrote to P&G for sanitary napkins for #kashmirfloods, they informed me they are already on it and working to save the children. Awesome," posted Surekha Pillai.
Similarly, Hemant Purohit posted: "Donate for #jkfloodrelief here's list of essential needs via on-ground sources - sanitary napkins, medicines."
As the flood waters have inundated most of Srinagar's residential and commercial areas, mobile coverage has become patchy across the city while there is no Internet connectivity.
So relatives and friends have taken to Twitter to share information about families feared to be trapped.
Haris Zargar said: "SOS: A family is stuck in Basant Bagh. There are 12 people trapped. The phone may/may not be working: 7298871569 #KashmirFloods."
People have also been frequently retweeting information about various helplines.
Arif Maghribi wrote: "Kashmir helpline: Srinagar: 0194-2474040, 2452138, 2455883, Shopian: 01933-261312, 9596028060, Budgam: 9906960666, 9419034370."
The death toll in the worst floods in Jammu and Kashmir in over 60 years is said to have crossed 150.
Heart-touching pictures of people wading through flood water, broken bridges and how boats are being used to rescue people are also being shared on the social media.

Facebook Targets Advertisers as 100 Million Log On in Africa

facebook_logo_reuters.jpg
One in 10 Africans are logging on to Facebook every month, the world's No.1 online social network said on Monday, presenting a new target audience for advertisers.
Of those 100 million people, 80 percent are accessing the platform via mobiles on a continent with very low internet penetration and smartphone ownership, it said.
Facebook's global mobile advertising revenue jumped more than 150 percent in the second quarter, accounting for about 62 percent of overall ad revenue.
"There is a fantastic opportunity for business as well if you are local or a global business. Knowing that there is all these people now in Africa that you can connect with, that is exciting as well," said Nicola Mendelsohn, Facebook's vice president for Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Seven in 10 African consumers access the internet through their mobile phones, compared with 6 percent who use desktop computers, according to an Ericsson study earlier this year.
Facebook would be pouring more resources into Africa to understand how consumers use its product and was considering opening an office on the continent in 2015, Mendelsohn said, without saying where the office might be.
The company is customising products to fit the needs of individual countries, she added. For example, it can now target users based on their internet speeds.
Facebook has more than 1.5 million active advertisers and more than 1.3 billion active users globally.
Mendelsohn could not say how much Africa contributes to advertising revenues but said the Europe, Middle East and Africa region makes up 30 percent of global revenue.

Twitter Begins Testing 'Buy' Button on Tweets

twitter_buy_now_button_tweets_official_blog.jpg
Twitter on Monday began testing "buy buttons" that let people make purchases directly from marketing posts fired off at the globally popular one-to-many messaging service.
The move comes as Twitter works to ramp up its appeal to people curious about what is happening at any given moment and to advertisers eager to connect with them.
"This is an early step in our building functionality into Twitter to make shopping from mobile devices convenient and easy, hopefully even fun," group product manager Tarun Jain said in an online post.
"In our test, the entire purchase can be completed in just a few taps."
The test was limited to a small group of Twitter users in the United States who access the service from mobile devices powered by Apple or Android software, according to Jain.
Users will have the option of having payment and shipping information encrypted and stored to speed up future purchases.
"We'll be starting the test with a group of artists, brands and nonprofit organizations, so follow them now and look out for great products over the coming weeks," Jain said.
The list of launch partners included Home Depot, Burberry, The Nature Conservancy, Soundgarden and Twenty One Pilots.

Tapping into e-commerce:

Advertisers will be able to pay to "promote" Twitter messages featuring buy buttons the same way other marketing tweets can be more prominently displayed.
Financial terms of the buy button arrangement were not disclosed.
In July, Facebook began testing a feature that lets users of the leading social network make purchases by simply pressing an on-screen "Buy" button.
The test was limited to a few small- or medium-sized businesses in the United States.
"People on desktop or mobile can click the 'Buy' call-to-action button on ads and page posts to purchase a product directly from a business, without leaving Facebook," the California-based Internet titan said in an online post.
The intent was to gauge the potential to drive retail sales through the Facebook newsfeed or on pages at the online social network, the post indicated.
Social networks are eager to seize the potential of tapping into e-commerce, especially as purchases using smartphones or tablet computers grow increasingly common.

Nokia earlier this week started rolling out the Nokia X Software Platform v2.1.0.11 for the X2 Dual SIM (RM-1013) smartphone users over-the-air. The smartphone was launched in June running the Nokia X Platform v2.0, based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
The announcement of the update was made by a company employee by the username 'armagon', on the official Nokia Discussions forum page, saying, "Today we have started rolling out a new software update for the Nokia X2 Dual SIM (RM-1013) owners. This is a major/global release, bringing the phone software version to Nokia X Software Platform 2.1 (2.1.0.11), and will be available via OTA (Over-The-Air)."
Nokia X2 Dual SIM device owners can check for updates by going to Settings > About Phone > System Updates and tapping Check Now.
The highlight of the Nokia X Software Platform v2.1.0.11 is the support for Google-based services, namely Google Contacts sync and access to user's Gmail inbox. Notably, these features were missing from the previous Nokia X Software Platform v1.2 update for Nokia X, Nokia X+, and Nokia XL handsets.
With the update, Nokia X2 Dual SIM users have also received a camera app update allowing them to make use of a new Smart Mode to capture objects that are in motion. Other new features include Action shot, Best shot, or Motion Blur, which are already present in several Lumia-branded handsets.
The '194MB' Nokia X Software Platform v2.1.0.11 update also features Microsoft`s OneDrive and OneNote sync. As a part of the update, the Nokia X2 Dual SIM users would now be able to store files up to 15GB on OneDrive, while having a sync feature of up to 500 notes on Onenote.
The update introduces Here Maps for Nokia X2 Dual SIM users. Also included are turn-by-turn voice guidance and free global navigation license. However, users would need to update their Here Maps app to the latest version via Nokia Store to be able to access the global navigation feature.
The Nokia Store app has also been redesigned to help users find content easily, and the company says the store now also has better integration with 3rd-party stores.
Other changes that come with the Nokia X Software Platform v2.1.0.11 are local calendar support, call reject with a message, parental controls for Store, landscape support for mail and messaging, auto-configuration of mail accounts, live wallpapers, and new lock screen widgets.
Nokia has not yet mentioned the list of other devices which will receive the Nokia X Software Platform v2.1.0.11 update.

Facebook Unveils 'Privacy Checkup' to Help Users Choose Their Settings

Facebook on Thursday began rolling out its "privacy checkup" aimed at helping users of the huge social network better manage sharing their information and postings.
The new system uses a blue dinosaur to guide Facebook users through its maze of privacy settings for personal information and for sharing their posts.
"We know you come to Facebook to connect with friends, not with us," Facebook's Paddy Underwood said in a blog post.
"But we also know how important it is to be in control of what you share and who you share with."
Facebook announced the plan in June in its latest response to concerns about privacy, following criticism over its data mining practices for marketing purposes.
The dinosaur will pop up when users log on to Facebook, and take them through each step of the privacy settings, from their personal information to the apps that may access Facebook data.
A privacy shortcut will also be on each Facebook page to allow users to update their privacy settings.
Facebook, which has grown to more than a billion members worldwide, has been dogged by privacy issues for years, as well as by lawsuits claiming it fails to ensure personal data is safeguarded from marketers and third-party apps.
The group agreed with a US government agency to submit to external audits of how well it guards users' data.

Hackers Broke Into Server for Obamacare Website, Say Officials

An unknown hacker or hackers broke into a computer server supporting the HealthCare.gov website through which consumers enroll in Obamacare health insurance, a government cyber-security team discovered last week, apparently uploading malicious files.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the lead Obamacare agency, briefed key congressional staff on Thursday about the intrusions, the first of which occurred on July 8, CMS spokesman Aaron Albright said.
The malware uploaded to the server was designed to launch a distributed denial of service, or DDoS, attack against other websites, not to steal personal information, Albright said.
In a DDoS, Internet-connected computers are so overwhelmed by malware attempting to communicate with their website that, unable to handle legitimate requests, they crash.
"Our review indicates that the server did not contain consumer personal information; data was not transmitted outside the agency, and the website was not specifically targeted," Albright said. "We have taken measures to further strengthen security."
Albright said the attack would have no impact on the second open enrollment period for Obamacare, which begins on Nov. 15.
The Office of Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services, CMS's parent agency, and HHS leadership were notified of the attack, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
Representative Diane Black of Tennessee, a longtime Republican critic of Obamacare, criticized CMS for the breach, saying: "Designing a secure website should have been a top priority for this administration."
Republican Darrell Issa, chairman of the House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said the committee would seek answers from CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner at a hearing on Sept. 18.
A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, which helps investigate cyber attacks, said its Computer Emergency Readiness Team, or US-CERT, had forensically preserved the affected server and had identified and extracted the malware designed to launch a denial of service attack.
US-CERT analysis indicated that only one server was involved. It was not running HealthCare.gov, but was instead used by programmers to test new code before it goes live.
The test server was not supposed to be connected to the Internet, but somehow was. In addition, access to it was protected by a default password installed by the manufacturer, said Albright, who declined to say if that default was 1-2-3-4-5 or something equally breachable.
Cyber-security expert David Kennedy, chief executive of the information security firm TrustedSec LLC, said he was unconvinced this was the first successful hack on HealthCare.gov.
"There are fundamental flaws in how they're coding the website and it's going to take a long, long time to fix it," he told Reuters. "It continues to be a really big glaring security hole."
It is rare for hackers to upload malware without following through to use it, he added.
