Google turns 18 today: A look at all the important products launched by the company
1 September 15, 1997: Google.com domain was introduced - Google.com is registered as a domain on September 15. The name was in fact, a play on the word "googol," a mathematical term for the number represented by the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros—reflects Larry and Sergey's mission to organize a seemingly infinite amount of information on the web.
2 July 2001: Google Images launched - Google Images is a search service owned by Google and introduced in July 2001, that allows users to search the Web for image content. The keywords for the image search are based on the filename of the image, the link text pointing to the image, and text adjacent to the image.
3 September 2002: Google News launched - Google News is a free news aggregator provided and operated by Google, selecting up-to-date news from thousands of publications. A beta version was launched in September 2002, and released officially in January 2006
4 April 01, 2004: Google launched Gmail on April Fools' Day - Gmail was a free, advertising-supported email service. At first invite-only, today it boasts more than 425 million users.
5 February 2005: Google Maps launched - Google Maps went live on this day, Just two months later, the company added satellite views and directions to the product.
6 June 2005: Google unveil Google Earth - This service was a satellite imagery-based mapping service that lets users take a virtual journey to any location in the world. Google Earth has since been downloaded more than 1 billion times.
7 November 2007: Android is announced - The Android OS was announced, which was the first open platform for mobile devices—and a collaboration with other companies in the Open Handset Alliance. It is said Google's Dan Morrill had put these drawings together for an internal presentation introducing Android APIs to Google's developers, and they were received well enough to earn the affectionate term Dandroids.
8 September 2008: The G1, the first Android based smartphone is released - The HTC Dream first released in October 2008, and was the first commercially released device to use the Linux-based Android operating system, which was purchased and further developed by Google.
9 September 02, 2008: Google Chrome was introduced - Linux-based operating system designed by Google was introduced to work exclusively with web applications. The product, was first released as a beta version for Microsoft Windows on September 2, 2008, and as a stable public release on December 11, 2008.
10 January 2010: Google introduced the Nexus One - The Nexus One was an Android smartphone designed and manufactured by HTC as Google's first Google Nexus smartphone. Some of the features included the ability to transcribe voice to text, an additional microphone for dynamic noise suppression, and voice guided turn-by-turn navigation to drive.
11 June 2011: The Google+ project - The Google+ project was an internet based social network that was owned by Google. However, unlike other successful products by the company, user engagement has been relatively low for Google+.
